In response to the global call to action against the deadly Coronavirus pandemic, YARD-Liberia, Inc., in partnership with Real Women of Substance (RWOS) and The Response Initiative, launched a Covid-19 Community Awareness Campaign across Margibi County.
Liberia confirmed its first case of Covid-19 on March 16, 2020, prompting the Government of Liberia to declare a state of emergency and enforce public health protocols. Recognizing the urgent need for grassroots education, YARD-Liberia mobilized and trained young volunteers and youth leaders to carry out health awareness activities in affected communities.
The campaign’s primary goal was to inform, educate, and sensitize community dwellers on Covid-19 prevention, including handwashing, use of face masks, and adherence to health protocols. Volunteers worked tirelessly to overcome initial resistance and build trust among residents.
From March 21 to April 17, 2020 (Phase I), the campaign reached several communities, including Dolo Town, Trouble Town, Borborville, Regent City, Camp #1, Harbelville, Old & New Research Camps, and Barclay Farm.
Though communities were initially hesitant, consistent engagement by trained volunteers led to greater compliance with Covid-19 preventive measures. Residents began adopting health practices that reduced the risk of spread, showing the power of youth-led awareness in safeguarding public health.
The campaign was powered by YARD-Liberia, RWOS, and The Response Initiative, with additional support from the District Two Development Council of Margibi County, which provided materials and modest funding.
